Master Your Crossovers!

Add Power and Speed To Your Turns

Gain Speed and Acceleration with your Crossover Turn!

Tips for a right front crossover:

1. While skating forward, your body should be in the ready position; feet shoulder-width apart, bent at the waist, head up, weight is on the balls of your feet and make sure your knees are bent while you lean slightly forward.

2. While skating forward, shift your weight to the right foot and keep your knee bent.

3. Start to step with your left foot (outside leg) forward and in front of your right skate (inside leg). When you land with your left skate in the direction you want to go, make sure all of your wheels land at the same time.

4. When you land with your left skate, shift your weight on your left skate and remember to keep your knees bent.

5. Now think of your right leg as the power leg, and your left leg as the directional leg. When your left leg lands, push off hard with the right leg to gain acceleration. Your right leg (inside leg) drives to the outside of the turn which will create acceleration.

6. Practice going in both directions by using the Figure 8 Drill. Set up two cones and skate a figure 8 around the cones. Remember to use your inside leg to push off hard to gain acceleration.

7. Remember to lean into the turns with your hips, not with your upper body. Your shoulders should remain parellel to the surface of the rink. Keep your weight on the balls of your feet and remain in the ready position.
